Dear Friend,
The whiplash of our region's weather — from sunny to snow and back again — is proof that spring has arrived. But no matter the weather, the Toiyabe Chapter's local activists are committed to protecting our lands, water, wildlife, and communities. The only thing we need to be more powerful — You! Let this May issue of our enewsletter be your inspiration!

Let's get here! With your help, we can do it!

Volunteer Opportunities
If you would like to spend some of your time volunteering with Sierra Club, there are some fun volunteering opportunities available:
Social Events and Tabling
We have several social and public-outreach events coming up soon. We need people to help plan them and inform people about Sierra Club's campaigns.
Planting Trees with Nevada Plants!
Sierra Club is teaming up with our favorite new nonprofit, Nevada Plants, with a community tree-planting event at Winchester Cultural Center in Las Vegas.
Technical Experts Needed!
If you have experience, education, or a strong interest in botany, biology, hydrology and other natural sciences, you can put it to good use by helping us draft technical comments and analyses in service to our wildlife and landscapes. Join our Conservation & Public Lands Team.
Learn more about all our opportunities and sign up here.

The Amargosa River starts at almost 4,000 feet at Pahute Mesa in the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and ends in the Badwater basin, in Death Valley National Park, California at 282 below sea level. It flows through Beatty, then southwest into California to Dumont Dunes where it bends and flows north to Badwater. The river flows underground most of its 185 miles, but surfaces around Beatty and in the Amargosa Canyon near Tecopa. The section between Shoshone and Dumont Dunes was recently designated a Wild and Scenic River. |

Protecting the Amargosa River
On May 25, the Nevada State Engineer will invite public comments on how to manage groundwater extraction in the Amargosa Groundwater Basin. At risk are the critically endangered Devil's Hole Pupfish and hundreds of other species along the 185-mile-long Amargosa River.
Your comments can help protect these threatened resources. Take action at the link below.
Water rights have already been allocated on the Nevada side and groundwater pumping is impacting the springs in this basin in California. Springs and groundwater monitoring is needed on the California side to measure the impacts. Thresholds need to be worked into the Nevada’s groundwater management plan that, when exceeded, will trigger reductions in groundwater pumping in order to maintain spring flows along the river on the California side. If you are interested in this topic, please attend the public hearing on May 25 or submit comments.

Avi Kwa Ame Updates
The Las Vegas Band of Paiutes Snow Mountain Powwow is back for their 30th annual celebration. And we will be there. Join Sierra Club as we share our vision and gather support for the proposed Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. RSVP here.
Our Lands Water & Wildlife Campaign participated in an Earth Day Panel with Arcadia Earth and other local nonprofit organizations like Nevada Plants, Three Square Food Bank, One Drop, and UNLV’s Department of Sustainability.
We partnered with the Friends of Walking Box Ranch, Basin and Range Watch and the Nevada Department of Wildlife — at the Earth Day BioBlitz — to verify and document more than 20 species of birds and reptiles. We were inspired by the natural beauty of Southern Nevada's Joshua tree forests around Walking Box Ranch.

Happy Antiquities Act!
Signed into law by Theodore Roosevelt on June 8, 1906, the Antiquities Act gives presidents the authority to designate National Monuments. Today there are 129 national monuments across the country, and a need to establish more, such as Avi Kwa Ame south of Las Vegas.
Read the blog post here.
Join us in person in Las Vegas on June 8 to celebrate the Antiquities Act and advocate for more protections for deserving public lands in Nevada.
