Thank You For Your PAC Donations!
THANK YOU to all who donated and/or attended our “No Foolin'” fundraiser for the Sierra Club Nevada PAC on April Fools' Day! We received some great
inspiration about why our work matters from our wonderful emcee Chris Giunchigliani and our great speakers Attorney General Ford, County Commissioners Tick Segerblom (Clark) and Alexis Hill (Washoe), Assembly members Howard Watts and Sarah Peters, and Meghan Wolf from Patagonia.
In addition, we had fun with some Nevada trivia AND raised over $6,000! This money will be used to help elect climate champions throughout the state. Thank you! Of course, it’s not too late to donate. You can do so through this link or by mailing a check made out to "Sierra Club Nevada PAC" to P.O. Box 8096, Reno, NV 89507.

Sisolak Commits to Tougher Truck and Bus Emissions Standards
On April 1, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed the Multi-State Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) . This MOU has already been signed by the governors of 17 states, along with Washington DC and Quebec Province. While not binding, the MOU is an important political declaration that directs a state's intention to require 30% of new truck and bus sales to be zero-emission by 2030, and 100% zero-emission by 2050. The MOU has also preceded adoption of the Advanced Clean Trucks rule in several states.
Thank you Governor Sisolak for this important Climate Action. We encourage you to direct all state agencies to adopt these standards as quickly as possible.

What is Equity? Why Does it Matter?
What is the difference between Equity and Equality? Equality is everyone getting the exact same treatment. Sounds fair, but is it? Equity is making sure each person gets what they need, as this picture shows. Equity can lead to equality.
One of the best ways we can demonstrate our commitment to equity, justice, diversity, and inclusion is by using respectful, thoughtful language when we speak or write. Sierra Club's Equity Language Guide is a great place to learn.

Be the Change. Volunteer.
Protecting the planet requires organized people challenging organized money — people like you working together, building relationships, engaging people from diverse backgrounds, developing leaders, and building broad support to win the changes we need.
What are you good at? Organizing people and information? Talking to others about your vision for the world? Graphic arts or social media? Digesting and demystifying arcane data? Electing our champion candidates? Rallying in the streets?
Whatever your talents, we need them — and you — to protect our beautiful world and ensure a livable future.
Volunteer for your local Sierra Club. Meet others who care, and let's work together using Sierra Club's tools and talents to change the world. We can do it, but we need you!
Volunteer today!

Donate to the Earth
We love Earth Day, because it draws much-needed public attention to protecting this beautiful planet on which we all depend. Please make a gift to the Toiyabe Chapter to support our work every day to benefit our lands, wildlife, and communities across Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and the Eastern Sierra. Thoughts, prayers, and inspiring social media posts have their role, but your gift supports our staff, volunteers, tools, and hard work necessary to create a healthier, happier future here in your community.

SNG Speaker Series: Birds from the Valley to Mt. Charleston
Imagine walking out the door in Las Vegas and hiking up a canyon at Red Rock, or summiting Mount Charleston. If you did, not only would that be impressive, but you'd notice that along with the plants, the birds would change as you hiked upwards in elevation. Alex Harper with Red Rock Audubon will give a slideshow presentation on what birds you might see or hear on your next hike, how they select habitat based on the types of plants, as well as the issues that these birds face.

Avi Kwa Ame April Update
Spirit Mountain — or Avi Kwa Ame in the language of the Mojave peoples — is closer to permenant protection thanks to the efforts of people at every level. Nevada Lieutenant Governor Lisa Cano Burkhead sent a letter asking the Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and the president to protect it.
And the work continues. You can help in the following ways:
Thank you! Together we can help protect this important landscape.

Good News for Conglomerate Mesa!
Last month K2 Gold announced that they were putting their gold exploration at Conglomerate Mesa on hold because the Bureau of Land Management was requiring an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for their Phase 2 project. Phase 2 involved drilling up to 4 holes at 30 different locations, creating roads to each of the drill sites, and hauling rock samples out by pack train. All this exploration activity would have a significant impact on the desert environment and would leave scars behind. K2 Gold is complaining that an EIS is an outrageous requirement. We don’t think so.

Tiehm's Buckwheat, Closer to Protected.
But will it be enough?
The US Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) is currently reviewing the Tiehm’s buckwheat (Eriogonum tiehmii) for a potential federal endangered species listing. April 4 was the close of a public comment period to gather input on what should be considered critical habitat and how much of a buffer zone is needed to protect the plants. Saving rare species means saving their habitats. What needs to be considered to keep its small ecosystem intact?
