Hello and happy Women's History Month! Women are responsible for the majority of the work that gets done here in the Toiyabe Chapter. We're proud and grateful for their service to the Club, the environment, and a better future! Follow their lead by supporting our work — with your words, action, and donations. Fish Slough Caught in the Middle
Fish Slough is a series of springs in the Eastern Sierra north of Bishop, Calif. Caught between groundwater pumping by Los Angeles Water and Power’s (LADWP) water diversions to Los Angeles and by local ranchers, farmers, and residents of the Tri-Valley, this national treasure, with its 14 imperiled species, is on the verge of drying up. But there's still time to take action.

What is Justice? Why Does it Matter?
At the Sierra Club we strive for justice within our chapter and in our communities. But what does justice mean? And how can we as individuals learn more about the concept while building stronger relationships with those around us?
This blog post by Toiyabe Chapter JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Chair Misty Haji-Sheikh explores the concept and offers suggestions on how we can each learn what justice means for ourselves and those around us.

SNG Speaker Series: Heat & Our Health
Reno and Las Vegas temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else in the country. Heat waves are uncomfortable, but also dangerous to our health. Join physicians and public health experts Joanne Leovy and Jacob Altholz for a discussion of the health effects of excessive heat, the inequity of this climate change effect, and possible solutions to help Nevadans cope with heat effects.

Support for Avi Kwa Ame Grows
Efforts to protect Avi Kwa Ame have made great strides this year. On February 15, the Clark County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution calling on Congress or President Biden to designate the proposed Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. Just days later, Nevada’s Congresswoman Dina Titus introduced legislation to do the same.
To everyone whose efforts have supported these successes over the past few years, thank you!! The Fort Mojave Tribe, local and national organizations, and dedicated Sierra Club volunteers have hosted community events and collected thousands of petition signatures in support of the proposed Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.
And the work continues. Join us at the following upcoming events:
- Saturday, March 12th, from 11am to 6pm, we’ll be collecting petition signatures at the 2nd Annual Meshika New Year at Nuwu Art Studios. Come enjoy this great event put together by the Children of the Corn Organization. Calpulli Tlateloco (Baile or Danza Azteca) will open the ceremony, and there will be other local native dancers, story tellers, artists, food vendors, and workshops throughout the day! All are welcome! RSVP Here.
- Friday, March 25th, from 5pm to 8pm, the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art will be hosting the opening reception of the Spirit of the Land Art Exhibition. The exhibition was curated by Kim Garrison-Means, Checko Salgado, and Mikayla Whitmore, featuring work by more than 40 artists and musicians who have chosen to celebrate the country around Spirit Mountain, the highest peak in the Spirit Mountain Wilderness. Spirit Mountain, known in the Mojave language as Avi Kwa Ame, is of the utmost cultural and religious significance to the Fort Mojave Tribe, 10 other Yuman-speaking tribes as well as the Hopi and Chemehuevi Paiute. RSVP Here.
And if you have not yet already signed our petition to protect Avi Kwa Ame, please do so now.

When developers dredged Lake Tahoe's largest natural wetland in the 1960s to build the Tahoe Keys development and lagoons, aquatic weeds like eurasian milfoil (above) quickly took control. Now authorities have approved plans to poison our treasured Tahoe with herbicides in a vain attempt to control the weeds, all while ignoring the underlying factors that invited them. Sierra Club is standing up for the health of Lake Tahoe, and we need your help! |

Sierra Club Petitions the CA State Water Resources Control Board to Save Lake Tahoe from Herbicides
On January 13, the Lahontan Water Board voted to approve permits for one-time use of herbicides in the Tahoe Keys lagoons, in violation of federal, state, and the Water Board’s own regulations. The Board ignored the Sierra Club’s testimony opposing the permits, as well as their previous Executive Officer’s strongly-worded testimony that the herbicide use does not satisfy Water Board regulations—an argument the Sierra Club has been making throughout the three-year environmental review process for this “test” project.
Sierra Club’s attorney submitted a petition to the State Water Resources Control Board on February 14, requesting the State Board cancel the permits approved by Lahontan because the permits violate Lahontan's own Basin Plan, the California Environmental Quality Act, and the Clean Water Act.
Watch our testimony to the Water Board here, beginning a 3:50:35.
Sierra Club is in this for the long-haul, as this process could take years. We need your help to win.
Please donate today to protect Lake Tahoe from both herbicides and invasive aquatic weeds.

In February, activists took to the streets of Mammoth Lakes to demand #NoHotCreekMine |
|
Hot Creek Mine Update.
Sierra Club and our partners have been fighting a proposed gold mine at world-renowned Hot Creek since last year. Winter has stopped the beginning of mine activities, giving us hope that a judge accepts our request to require a more formal environmental review.
