Nevada Rail Coalition Advances Rail Across the West
Thanks to the great work by volunteers Anne Macquarie, Ron Kaminkow, Janet Carter and others, the Sierra Club Toiyabe Chapter is a founding member of the Nevada Rail Coalition, an effort by labor organizations, environmental groups, passenger/freight rail advocacy associations, social justice organizations, and neighborhood/community associations to expand both passenger and freight rail across Nevada and the West. An expanded, robust rail system in Nevada and neighboring states can be the keystone of a low-carbon, environmentally sustainable and socially just transportation system that helps the United States meet its carbon-reduction goals.

Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI)
JEDI is the newest Committee created by the Chapter ExCom. Misty Haji-Sheikh was elected to be the new Chair. This committee will focus on JEDI values and principles within our Chapter, JEDI trainings, and more. JEDI is looking for volunteers.
Why do we ask for your pronouns?
At the beginning of our meetings, we ask for your name and pronouns. We do this to allow each person to identify as they see themselves, which may be different than how you may see them. Everyone has a right to change their pronouns, or not to identify with any pronouns at all. Whether you identify as he/him/his; she/her/hers; they/them/theirs; or a combination of any of these, please be patient with us as this is new to many of our members, and the use of your pronouns may not be easy to get right. (Some of us were taught that they/them/theirs were only used as plural, not as singular). If you find that you have used the wrong pronoun, take a breath, correct yourself with the correct pronoun. We are committed to making everyone feel welcome and included, because to change everything, we need everyone. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
~Misty Haji-Sheikh, Volunteer JEDI Chair

Public Lands, Will You Be My Valentine?
Join the Sierra Club’s Our Wild America Campaign on February 14 to virtually mix with and mingle with fellow environmentalists who love Nevada's public lands and are ready to do more to protect them. Public lands are beautiful places that inspire our love and wonder of nature. Now more than ever, these lands need your adoration and support.
We need help urging the Biden administration to designate the proposed Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. Nevada’s public lands also need your help to push back against the Nevada Bureau of Land Management’s leasing of public lands for oil and gas development, which would hurt unique places like the Railroad Valley Wildlife Management Area.

Public Sessions for the Gold Butte Management Plan
The Bureau of Land Management Southern Nevada District will be holding two virtual information forums to involve the public in the early stages of a proposed management plan for the Gold Butte National Monument, which was designated by President Obama in 2016 after decades of advocacy by Sierra Club and our conservation partners.
The virtual information forums will be held online on February 15 and 17, 2022, from 6pm to 8pm.
Gold Butte National Monument protects priceless beauty, wildlife habitat, cultural resources, and recreational opportuntiies. Inspiring Connections Outdoors Coming to Reno
Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) is a community outreach program of the Sierra Club, dedicated to providing underserved urban youth the opportunity to discover the beauty of wild places, develop an appreciation for nature, acquire the skills to enjoy these places safely, and gain confidence and leadership skills they can use throughout life. Although there is a Las Vegas ICO group already providing these experiences, the Reno ICO group is just starting up.
A leadership group is forming and we need more folks willing to spend a few hours a month to get it going. No outings experience necessary! We are meeting once per month, virtually at this time. In addition to the Leadership Team, Reno ICO is looking for trip leaders and volunteers to guide youth from schools and agencies on day and weekend trips, which will include backpacking, snowshoeing, hiking, and rafting. Training and certification will be provided as needed.

Support Reno's Proposed Tree Ordinance
The Reno City Council is considering a Tree Protection Ordinance that would increase the tree canopy within the City by supporting the retention of healthy trees and updating replacement requirements for removed trees on both public and private properties.
As you know, trees are a great way to fight our climate crisis. They sequester carbon, remove pollution from the air, and cool neighborhoods, all while filtering water, providing essential oxygen, and boosting property values and economic activity to boot.
Reno is one of the fastest-warming cities in the nation, with an urban canopy less than half of those in Boise or Salt Lake City. Trees are sorely needed to secure a climate-resilient future for our "City of Trembling Leaves."
You can learn more about the ordinance here, and use the comment form to submit your feedback. Learn more about the benefits of trees here. Time to take the Lorax's advice, and speak for the trees.
