Build Back Better Needs Your Help
Sierra Club’s goal to see Congress act on climate and justice faces hurdles as Congress considers both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the Build Back Better Act, which would advance a bold climate, jobs and justice platform. Success for the bold action our nation needs depends on how well Democratic leadership and the Congressional Progressive caucus hold firm. Kait Krolik, Toiyabe Chapter's Lead Organizer, dives into the details of what's at stake and how you can help.

Transportation Updates
Clean Car Standards Will Help Nevada.
Clean Car Standards are up for adoption at the Nevada Legislative Commission hearing next Friday, October 22nd! Clean car standards will help clean our air, lower transportation emissions, and expand the electric vehicle market in the state so that prices lower and electric vehicles are accessible to more people. We appreciate the work Governor Sisolak and the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection have done to bring these standards to our state -- and we are counting the days until the Clean Cars program is a reality in Nevada! Read our new blog to find out more and get involved!
Jasmine Vazin is Moving Onward and Upward!

Thank you again for two wonderful years at the Toiyabe Chapter!"
Thank you, Jasmine, for your great work moving Nevada forward toward sustainable transportation and cities!!

How You Can Prevent Dangerous Algae Blooms
Algae blooms have become more common across the country, even here in Nevada and the Eastern Sierra. There have been algae blooms in Crowley Lake near Bishop and Bridgeport Reservoir. In the north, the Truckee River watershed has had algae blooms at Virginia Lake in Reno and at Pyramid Lake. These algae blooms have prompted local water quality officials and health departments to issue warnings to avoid swimming and recreating in these waterways due to health risks.
What makes these blooms so dangerous, and how can you help prevent them?
Read more in this blog by Carrie Jensen with One Truckee River.

Washoe County Activists Needed!
Senator Rosen is drafting new public lands legislation for Washoe County. In the past, the Washoe County Commission has pursued similar legislation to sell off your public lands for development, while providing scant protections for wild and threatened landscapes throughout the county. This new effort brings hope, but a strong bill will require activists like you to show up and speak out for conservation, equity and climate action!
We will be hosting conversations within the next month for Sierra Club members and supporters to help us align our priorities for this bill. If you are interested in working to protect Washoe County's open spaces, improve quality of life, and ensure climate sustainability in the Truckee Meadows, sign up to join the Sierra Club discussion.

Defend Tahoe Against a Draft Permit to Use Herbicides!
In September, the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board (LWB) released a draft permit that would allow the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) to apply aquatic herbicides for the very first time in the Tahoe Keys lagoons, which flow into Lake Tahoe. This proposal goes against federal & state regulations, and the LWB's own Basin Plan.
The deadline for comments is November 1, 2021. Please send comments to lahontan@waterboards.ca.gov. Tell LWB that non-chemical methods must be fully tested before testing herbicides.

Inside the Nevada-Utah Water Wars
Nevada and Utah's shared border brings with it a history of conflict over water. We will take a look at how our border divides and unites us as our water supply shrinks and our demands grow.
Join Kyle Roerink, the Executive Director of the Great Basin Water Network, for "The Nevada-Utah Water Wars: A Brief History" and a discussion of his work to defend and preserve the West's most precious natural resource.
