The days are cooling, smoke is clearing (for most), and autumn is right around the corner. No matter the season, our work continues to protect our region's lands, waters, and communities. This is a group effort, and you're an important part of our success. Here's an update of what we're doing and how you can help.

Help Ban Wildlife Killing Contests
Did you know Nevada allows contests that encourage people to kill as many predators (coyotes, bobcats, cougars, etc.) as possible for cash and prizes? This bloodsport has no scientific basis. It's senseless and violent.
It's time to ban these contests.
In March, the Clark County Commission banned these contests. Last week, the Reno City Council also supported the ban.
The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners has the power to ban these contests in Nevada. They will consider the question on September 25. But they will only support a ban with overwhelming public support.
Please speak out on behalf of our wildlife neighbors in Nevada.

The Power of Public Lands Day
Each autumn, volunteers across the state and country participate in clean-ups and other events on our public lands (lands owned by you and the rest of We The People and managed on our behalf by federal and state agencies).
Getting people outdoors to places that need protecting, connecting them with those places, and inspiring those people to act as advocates and stewards of our public lands, forests, and waters is central to Sierra Club’s history, its mission, and the organization's future.
Read more about Public Lands Day in Nevada and upcoming events in this blog by Our Wild America organizer Christian Gerlach.
RSVP here for a volunteer stewardship event in the proposed Avi Kwa Ame national monument on October 2.

The Power of Your Political Action
This summer has been proof enough we all need stronger climate action.
Which means we need to elect climate champions in 2022.
To win, we need to start now.
The Toiyabe Chapter Political Committee (PolCom) is meeting Monday, September 20, to start building our victory now.

Become a Changemaker. Join a Local Sierra Club Executive Committee.
The Sierra Club's grassroots power comes from local volunteers elected for two-year terms to guide the work of the Toiyabe Chapter and each of the Chapter's local groups (this photo is from our board retreat in 2019).
Every December we hold elections, and open seats are available. Please consider joining one of our teams. Or you can serve short term on our Nominations or Elections committees.
If you're interested, reply to this email, and we'll provide details.

Southern Nevada Group
SNEDCA is Dangerous Legislation
By Kyle Roerink, Director of Great Basin Water Network and Toiyabe Executive Committee member.
Lake Mead keeps dropping. Yet developers are leading the charge to sell off 42,000 acres of public lands in Las Vegas that would be satiated with new water pipelines connected to the Colorado River.
The Toiyabe Chapter's Southern Nevada Group has been leading the effort to stop this outdated and foolish proposal—the Southern Nevada Economic Development and Conservation Act (SNEDCA). We're making phone calls, mailing literature, mobilizing community members and sending a message to federal lawmakers and the Clark County Commission: the people of Clark County don't want sprawl all the way to the California border.
We cannot do this work alone. Read more and take action today.
