All-In for Infrastructure
The U.S. Senate and House are busy working on a multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure package. Why? Because our nation’s roads, bridges and other infrastructure are in dire need of investment.
One of every 5 miles of U.S. roads is in poor condition while 24,000 buses, 5,000 rail cars, 200 stations, and thousands of miles of track, signals, and power systems are in need of replacement or repair. Congress and the White House are currently debating how to invest in infrastructure -- how much money? What are the priorities? And how can you help our region get the money and infrastructure we need?
At Sierra Club, we are working within many coalitions to improve the current bill to address our country’s greatest needs while advocating for climate action to be included. For example, this bill currently would replace only 25% of lead pipes, we are calling on our Congressional Delegation to replace ALL lead pipes in the U.S. We are also asking that this bill:
- Achieves 100% Clean Energy with a Clean Energy Standards & Clean Energy Tax Incentives.
- Improves Access to Public Transit and Produce Union-built Electric Cars, Trucks, and Buses.
- Provides adequate funding to electrify our nation's school buses.
- Ends Fossil Fuel Subsidies.
- Replaces 100% of Lead Pipes.
- Retrofits and Electrifies All Public Housing, Schools, and Hospitals.
- Creates a Civilian Climate Corps and Clean Up Abandoned Mines and Wells.
What can you do? Join us by taking action today!
- Use this toolkit to target Nevada's delegation with calls and social media.
- Sign this petition to send a message directly to your congressional representatives and to stay up to date with our action!

Clean Transportation For All Updates
Clean Cars NV: 100% Support at Public Workshop!
At the July 28th Nevada Department of Environmental Protection’s Public Workshop for Clean Car Standard adoption in Nevada, there was major agreement on the need for clean car standards to be approved in the state. The proposed regulatory package received no opposition and support was provided by the Sierra Club, clean energy advocates, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, and the Nevada Franchised Auto Dealers Association. Sierra Club submitted our petition with over 350 of your signatures and comments in support of these standards ahead of this workshop- thank you for taking the time to support Clean Car Standards!
This widespread support is in part due to the hard work with our partners within the Nevada Clean Cars Coalition, which the Sierra Club has been working with throughout the standards adoption process. The next step for clean cars will be a hearing at the state Environmental Commission on September 1st, where the Commission will take a vote on the standards adoption. Things are looking positive for Clean Car Standards to be adopted in Nevada this fall! More information on the upcoming Environmental Commission hearing here.
Transform Clark County Draft Master Plan Released
Transform Clark County, an initiative to re-write Clark County’s comprehensive plan and development code, has released this draft version of the proposed master plan update. The Toiyabe Chapter has been participating in this program since its launch, and has been calling for explicit climate planning language to be included in the final documents resulting from this initiative. Now more than ever as wildfires rage, the drought worsens, and extreme heat beats down on our communities- we need mitigating climate change to be the top priority for all aspects of Nevada planning going forward.
This is why we need community members to weigh in on the plan and share your experience as residents of this region, so that the county can create documents and plans that reflect what our community truly needs. To share your perspective and get involved in this program, you can participate in the activities below:

Inspiring Connections Outdoors Outings Return!
The Las Vegas chapter of Sierra Club’s Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) is VERY happy to announce that they are preparing to re-start outings in fall of 2021. These will be the first outings since we shut down due to the pandemic in March of 2020. We know that the kids we help get outdoors cannot wait to get out there…and neither can our leaders!
We are in the process of recruiting new volunteers for Las Vegas ICO. We are looking for folks willing to be outings leaders or co-leaders, but if you aren’t a hiker, you can help us with paperwork, planning, fundraising, and record-keeping and database maintenance. If you are interested, please email ICO Chair Janet Carter.
Join our virtual volunteer orientation on Monday, August 30th at 6:30 pm MT.
Our mission is to get children who might otherwise not have the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy nature. Learn more about Las Vegas ICO here. Hope to see you on the trail soon!

Great Basin National Monument: What, Where, and Why?
Join us for a special virtual Sierra Club Southern Nevada Group Monthly Speakers Program featuring Ecologist Jim Boone, speaking on the topic "Basin & Range National Monument."
You will learn what it is, where it is, and why we should care about it. As Jim puts it, this part of Nevada "is like abstract art — often we need to stand quietly looking at the piece before we start to understand it's power." You'll also be getting to know your fellow outdoor enthusiasts and the volunteers and members of the Sierra Club's Southern Nevada Group.

Thacker Pass Lithium Mine Updates
As many know, the Thacker Pass project is an expansive lithium mine proposed by Lithium Nevada Corp. in Humboldt County just south of the Montana Mountain Range. It would desecrate sacred traditional lands of the Paiute and Shoshone people, affect living conditions and livelihoods of the nearby agricultural communities in Orovada and Kings River Valley, and present a host of water, air, and wildlife issues.
