Bills would stop National Monument designations by President in Nevada

Dean Heller and Congressman Mark Amodei's legislation would essentially stop future designations of any National Monuments in Nevada by the President. Their bills (S.22, H.R. 243) make it harder for Nevadans to protect public lands, wildlife, archeology, rare or endangered critters and plants. There'd be no National Monument at Gold Butte if this law were in effect because it would require approval of the Congress regardless of widespread public support. The Antiquities Act passed Congress in 1906 and has been used since President Teddy Roosevelt's time to protect places like Lehman Caves (now a key feature of Nevada's Great Basin National Park) and the part of Death Valley National Park in Nevada.
