Gold Butte National Monument

On December 28, 2016, President Obama protected Gold Butte as a National Monument of 296,937 acres. The new monument (click here for a map) has Lake Mead National Recreation Area to its south and west and the Nevada-Arizona border to its east. Contained within the new National Monument are Lime Canyon and Jumbo Springs Wilderness Areas already designated by Congress. Senator Reid and Congresswoman Titus both had encouraged the President to protect the area of vast archaeological resources and red rock scenery.
