Check out this graph of unemployment rates in western state's counties versus their proportion of federal land. What you see in this graph is a scattering of data points that means: there is no correlation. Simple conclusion is that high amounts of federal land is not keeping counties impoverished nor unemployed. (Thanks to Michael Weissman for this graph.)
