The 87th Legislative Session may seem like a lifetime away, and admittedly we can’t predict what it will look like when it kicks off in January as many new representatives and senators make their way to the Pink Dome.
Will they meet physically together? Will they allow lobby types and citizens to roam the halls in the time of COVID? Will they even take verbal public input, or will everything be written? Will they do a shortened session focused on the budget, taxes and COVID-relief and then come back later in 2021 once hopefully the pandemic is more under control?
We don’t actually know. We do know however that no matter the outcome, the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club will be prepared. Nevertheless, we will always need lots of activists and partner organizations to join us in the fight for cleaner air, environmental justice, cleaner water, action on climate, protection of frontline communities, green infrastructure and land preservation. We are busy drafting bills with some of our friends in the legislature, and we are hoping that a bunch of new friends will get elected on November 3rd to help us (check out our endorsements at turntexasgreen.com).
On Saturday, December 12th from 11 AM to 1 PM, we will offer a discussion and training around the upcoming legislative session - what we know and don’t. The discussion will be interactive -- with y’all! We will invite some partner organizations as well to enrich our discussion as we work collectively for a better, more just and cleaner Texas. Save the date and register today!
Register to our zoom link here. While the event is free, we would love donations as we get ready for the session. And as always, thank you for your continued support and commitment to creating a healthy and equitable future for Texas!
