May 2020 Donor Shout Out: Derek Eckert

We're trying something new here at the Lone Star Chapter. We want to give our supporters and donors a shoutout, no matter how big or small your contribution might be, to show our appreciation for your continued support! If you'd like a shoutout or want to nominate someone, email our communications coordinator at courtney.naquin@sierraclub.org and we can queue them up to be featured on our blog and in our newsletter. The shout-out is a short Q&A about what motivates you to support us. Thank you so much for giving!

Our first shout out goes to Derek Eckert, a valued and long-time supporter and donor of the Lone Star Chapter.

1. How long have you been a Sierra Club member, and what inspired you to become one?

I first became aware of the Sierra Club back in the early 90's when I was in college. I had a great Ecology professor who would give extra credit for assisting graduate students in field work and going to Sierra Club meetings. I lost all connection to the Sierra Club for some time as the demands of work and family increased. Then, about 5 years ago, I made a commitment to make a difference and help fight climate change in whatever ways I could. One of my first actions was to join Sierra Club. I'm pretty sure I'll stay around this time.

2. How long have you been donating?

I used to give a little to a lot of different charities, but at the same time I decided to become more committed to the Sierra Club I also decided that I was going to make bigger contributions to those organizations that I truly felt were fighting for change - again, Sierra Club was tops on my list.

3. What motivates you to give to the Sierra Club?

When I find the time to read through all the emails from the various groups within Sierra Club, Outings, Hitched, Turn Texas Green, Dirty Fuels, and on and on, each one resonates with me and would be worthy efforts if each group were a separate organization.

5. Not everyone has the monetary means of donating. What are other ways of “donating” and how are they important?

As much as the Sierra Club needs and appreciated financial support the organization is always looking for volunteers. Because the organization is involved in so many different areas there is surely to be an area where each member could truly shine. If you have a skill and are willing to spare some time I am confident there is a way the Sierra Club could benefit from it - visit our website, go to your group's meetings, or call our Lone Sta chapter headquarters to learn about the various opportunities.

6. What would you tell someone who is considering donating?

The Sierra Club is the most welcoming organization I have ever been a part of, and to keep it accessible to nearly everyone the annual dues are minimal. Its mission is critical and if you have the financial means, I would suggest there is no organization more worthy of your charity. Even more so being a recurring donor makes you truly feel connected, vested and committed to its success
