Hal Suter passed away on Monday, August 5, after a long battle with colorectal cancer and pulmonary fibrosis. We know he touched many lives through the years and through the many organizations of which he was a part. Hal was a particularly important and active member with the Sierra Club's Lone Star Chapter, serving since 2001 on our statewide executive committee, including as our chair from January 2009 until January 2013, as well as being an active member of our political committee. Hal also served as chair of the local Coastal Bend Sierra Club in Corpus Christi, including the last three years. With Sierra Club, Hal took a particular interest in deepening relations with labor unions, serving on various committees designed to bridge relationships with local and national worker’s rights organizations and serving on the statewide Apollo Alliance. Hal had an easy-going and keen sense of humor, and was not above making fun of others, but most notably, himself.
In recognition of this impact, the Suter family will be holding a Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 10:00am, at the Seaside Funeral Home main chapel, 4357 Ocean Dr, Corpus Christi, TX 78412. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Hal’s honor to charities of the donor’s choice. Hal was particularly fond of the Cattery Cat Shelter in Corpus Christi and multiple environmental organizations, such as The Nature Conservancy.
During this celebration, the Suter family will be displaying photos from the many phases of his life, and they request that, if you have any that you would like to share, to please email copies of those to the address below. People will speak about the various phases of Hal’s time with us. Some have already volunteered; any others who would like to share reminiscences are encouraged and more than welcome to do so. Please let the Suter family know so that they can set aside some time for you.
The family is also considering good ways to memorialize Hal and the impact he had in the environmental and political arenas. Although some concepts are already being discussed, the family would welcome any ideas from those that knew and worked with him.
