Nydia Gutierrez Joins Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter

Nydia Gutierrez
Nydia Gutierrez, a bilingual Texas native, is the newest addition to the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter, where she will serve as Communications Coordinator. Born and raised in Brownsville, TX, a bordertown in the Rio Grande Valley, Nydia brings over seven years of experience in public relations, communications, community organizing, coalition building, fundraising, and government relations to help support Sierra Club’s mission of protecting our environment and wildlife. Armed with a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and having served as a fundraiser for the 2012 Obama re-election campaign and 2013 Inaugural Committee, Nydia fuses her DC political experience with forward-thinking environmental advocacy. At the forefront of advocating for increased diversity in conservation, and to get more Latinos engaged in outdoor recreation and environmental advocacy, Nydia most notably worked as the DC Regional Coordinator for Latino Outdoors creating events in partnership with local and federal entities, private companies, and non-profit organizations. Her extensive volunteerism shines as a board member for the Ocean Foundation, a guest White House panel speaker, and author on various print and online articles promoting outdoor activity and healthy environments. Her love of the outdoors stemmed from childhood visits to South Padre Island which provided for a variety of activities from surfing and kayaking to fishing and camping. The area also serves as a major bird migration route, thus establishing her love for ornithology and birding.

In her new role, Nydia aims to serve as an active and invaluable resource to our chapter’s community, the press and the public, and continue to advocate for clean environmental practices and sound legislative actions.
