In July, the Chapter recognized two years worth of environmental award winners at our annual Environmental Awards Banquet at the Blue Mesa Grill in Addison. As terrific an evening as it was, not all award winners were able to join us. Wally James, host of “Progressive Forum” on KPFT-Pacifica in Houston, was unable to attend and deserves a little more recognition for the important work he is doing. Evelyn Merz, Conservation Chair, has more…
When it comes to actually getting environmental information out on the radio in Houston, KPFT-Pacifica is where to go and it is the only place to go to really discuss an environmental issue. The environment is lucky to get one minute on the general news elsewhere.
Wally James does not have the only show on KPFT that welcomes coverage of environmental issues. There are others such as Eco-ology and Thresholds. However, over the years Wally has been consistently welcoming and has come to Houston Sierra Club meetings when we had a speaker on a topic particularly suited to a segment for his show. He has invited Sierra Club speakers on topics related to the Keystone XL pipeline, state park funding, legislative issues, and Buffalo Bayou. Wally often devotes long segments of his show, 15-20 minute discussions at times (a century in today’s hyper-speed news scanning mishmash), and actually informs listeners about an issue.
We are proud to recognize Wally James and KPFT-Pacifica, and glad we got the chance to present Wally with his award during a recent program.
