Chickasaw September 2020 Issue

Upcoming environmental events and news for West TN

As people across the country protest in defense of Black lives, the Sierra Club recognizes the need to dismantle systemic racism in the United States and within our own organization. We must reckon with how white supremacy -- both past and present -- has shaped our institutions and do the critical anti-racism work necessary to repair the harm done. The environmental movement does not exist in a vacuum, and it is our responsibility to use our power to help abolish systemic racism, which is destroying lives, communities, and the planet.

Message from the Executive Committee Chair

Chickasaw, like most everything else, has gone through dramatic changes since we elected the Executive Committee at the end of last year.  As everyone's life has been altered by COVID, some people have had to step back and others step up. This is true, not only of the Executive Committee but also other committees, such as Membership, Programs, etc.  At the September 2, 2020 Executive Committee meeting, I was appointed to fill a vacancy and also asked to be the Executive Committee Chair.

With the fourth quarter about to begin, I have no grandiose plans to remake Chickasaw, I only want continuity until our next election cycle. We will have monthly program meetings (virtually) on September 17, October 15, and November 19.  I also hope we can do something special for the holiday.  What form it will take remains to be seen.  Anyone interested in helping make that event happen is welcome to contact us through the email, chickasawsierra@gmail.com.

Based on guidance from national, there are no plans to resume outings in 2020.

In closing let me say that, more than ever, the mission of Sierra Club is vital and I have the utmost appreciation for all the hard work of our team this year.

Yours in the Efforts to Make This a Better World,

Charles Belenky

Who We Are

Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization -- with more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge to move away from the dirty fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and toward a clean energy economy.

The Chickasaw Group is one of five Sierra Club Groups within the Tennessee Chapter. We're based in Memphis and serve the 19 counties west of the Tennessee River. The Chickasaw Group works to protect the natural heritage of West Tennessee and the health and well being of human and wild communities.
