South Dakota Sierra Club is currently nominating its Executive Committee. The Executive Committee is elected by the membership and charged with managing campaigns, raising and maintaining chapter funds, and communicating with our membership. We have eight executive committee positions available, descriptions of which are listed below:
Chapter Chair:
Responsibilities
To accomplish this role effectively, the chair should:
- Work with the ExCom to create the most appropriate volunteer and staff structure.
- Identify the right person for each particular job and help them to understand their job.
- Follow up to see that people have the support they need to do their jobs adequately.
Duties of the chair (which may be delegated):
- Arrange for executive committee meetings.
- Appoint/reappoint committee chairs and members, in consultation with the ExCom.
- Appoint nominating and election committees.
- Develop and distribute an agenda for each executive committee meeting.
- Conduct executive committee meetings according to the agenda.
- Bring parties together to resolve problems and conflicts.
- Before leaving office, train a replacement.
Vice Chair
Responsibilities
- Act as support person to the chair, acting as a sounding board and participating in discussion.
- Act as a support person for the executive committee and other leaders.
- Assume the duties of the chair if that person is unable to perform necessary functions:
- Preside at the executive committee and general membership meetings.
- Appoint committee leaders, especially for the nominating and elections
committees if the chair’s absence is a long one. - Before leaving office, train a replacement.
Secretary
Purpose of Position

- Record minutes
- Maintain copy of bylaws
- Maintain records

Outings Chair
Responsibilities
- Familiarity with the Outings Leader Training (OLT 101) and all national and local Club policies and procedures that pertain to the chapter's outings program(s).
- Ensure all local chapter, group, and section outings are run in accordance with Club policies and procedures.
- Manage and minimize the risks of local outings programs.
- Maintain training and first aid certification requirements for outings leaders, and ensure active leaders meet these requirements.
- Encourage the creation of new outings programs in those groups where programs do not currently exist.
- Coordinate scheduling, planning, and publication requirements of chapter outings as required by local chapter and national policies.
- Maintain records as required by the chapter and/or national staff.
Political Chair
Responsibilities
- To preserve the environment through grassroots, bipartisan, political action.
- To keep the organization up-to-date on environmentally-related political issues
- To speak on behalf of the organization regarding environmentally-related political issues when available
- To inform ExCom about upcoming legislative issues and help guide political strategy
Conservation Chair
Responsibilities
- Provide chapter leaders with a long-range vision of what the Club's conservation strategy and priorities should be over the next two to five years.
- Identify conservation issues needing attention and worthy of chapter consideration.
- Assist chapter leaders to develop conservation priorities.
- Design plans and strategies for current conservation campaigns.
Membership Chair

- Compile and distribute membership list to Executive Committee
- Work to recruit new Sierra Club members
- Reach out to and engage with new Sierra Club members
Equity Chair
Responsibilities
- Help maintain an inclusive environment within Sierra Club
- Work to provide training opportunities for membership
- Ensure that equity principles are being used within the Executive Committee
