Living River Group August Newsletter

Hello Living River Group –

I hope you are having a wonderful summer. August is looking like a busy month for those of us interested in theenvironment, the outdoors and sharing time with friends. See you along the way. -Clarence Pederson

Our regular 3 rd Tuesday of the month meeting will be Aug 16, 7:00pm in the Vermillion Public Library. The guest speaker will be Dana Loeske, the current Sierra Club Chair for South Dakota. He will be updating us on his efforts with the Friends of the Big Sioux River group and all they are doing related to non-point pollution, buffer strips and other issues. He will also be discussing his ideas about having the eastern South Dakota Sierra Club affiliated with South West Minnesota or North West Iowa groups because of interests we may have in common. Let’s use this meeting to brainstorm upcoming speakers and events. Come with ideas and interests.

On Monday, Aug 15 th at 7:00pm the Clay County Commissioners will hold a Public Hearing about the proposed changes to the CAFO Ordinance (concentrated animal feeding operations} Many of us are concerned that this ordinance is loosening the current restrictions. The ordinance with proposed changes is posted on the Clay County Commissioners website http://www.claycountysd.org/commissioners.cfm scroll down to see the ordinance. Please review the changes and come to this hearing if you have concerns that you want to express.

Several opportunities are available for people interested in paddling the Missouri. The Missouri National Recreational River Water Trail Facebook page lists a paddle on MNRR Water Trail on Sunday, Aug 13 from Myron Grove to Clay Co Park. Registration required at website listed. This will feature the interpretive app that can be downloaded to phone for noting features along the way. Another paddle will be held on Sept 10, route to be determined. Check the Water Trail Facebook page for details.

Friends Of The Missouri National Recreational River also is hosting two paddle and campout events on Aug 6-7 and Aug 17-18 on the 59 mile stretch http://www.fomnrr.org/ and a Kayak event during River Boat Days on Aug 20

A SPECIAL INVITATION: Barbara and Dr. Charles Yelverton are hosting, at their straw bale house near Wagner, members of a national Sierra Club outing group who are paddling the Missouri on Monday, Sept 5. They are inviting members of Living River Group who want to meet other Sierra Club members to join them for dinner on Sept 5 at the house at 31042 County Road #2, Wagner, SD.  RSVP required if you wish to attend. Celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the National Park Service, in our own Missouri National Recreational River park, on Aug 25, 6:00pm at Riverside Park in Yankton. Details will be posted on the MNRR website and Facebook pages.
