COLUMBIA, S.C., Sierra Club South Carolina Chapter remains fully committed to advancing climate action at the state and local levels. With 5,000+ members across the Palmetto, our members are working on local climate and conservation issues closest to the communities that need them the most, especially emergence-burdened communities that often bear the brunt of the climate crisis.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Representative-Elect Hamilton Grant on his win to serve the people of South Carolina House District 79. We endorsed him in the primary and are excited to work with him and other legislators on South Carolina's energy transition and climate action to build resilience throughout the state.
Despite the election outcome, we have made remarkable progress in promoting climate action across our communities.
This year alone the Sierra Club South Carolina Chapter has accomplished the following:
- Distribute over 5,000 Get Out the Vote (GOTV) mailers
- Eunice Lemacher (Foothills Group) ran for state office.
- The Foothills Group hosted an energy efficiency workshop
- Lunz Group advocated for eliminating plastic nurdles
- Distributed hundreds of flood kits to low-income residents in Marion County, SC.
- Challenging Duke Energy's request to renew the license for the Oconee Nuclear Station
And much more.
This moment is a defining one for our country, and we will rise to the challenge with the same unwavering determination we have demonstrated in the past because our future depends on it. The recent impact of Hurricane Helene has shown us that rising marine temperatures from global warming lead to stronger hurricanes, which can devastate flood-prone areas in our state.
While the election is behind us, the climate crisis is in front of us, and we will confront it with a renewed determination.
