If you’re like us, you owe much of your love for outdoor adventure to a parent (or parents) who shared that same passion while you were growing up. That may have included a burly outdoorsman papa who climbs mountains and creates fire from sticks, or a dad who simply takes pleasure in yard work and barbecues. For Father's Day, inspire your old man to get back outside with these 17 items.

Does your dad like to get caffeinated on the trails, or does he covet a campfire-side cocktail? This Klean Kanteen “Hike All Day” travel mug ($36), exclusively available from United By Blue—a water-conservation-minded outdoor goods brand—holds up to 16 ounces of fluid. It also comes with a leakproof cap and double-wall vacuum insulation. That means Dad’s coffee will stay hot for up to eight hours, and that he can pack his nightcap at the start of a long day of backpacking; as he tucks himself into his tent, those ice cubes should still be tinkling.

Gifting an adventure traveler presents a special challenge, as compact storage is paramount to him pursuing his passion. But whether your dad seeks to get away in the mountains, in the forest, or at sea, shades are non-negotiable. The new, aviator-inspired Popairs ($190) from portable-sports-sunglasses brand Popticals are made to collapse into a tiny, easy-to-pack case. Crafted in Italy, they also boast polarized, scratch-resistant polyamide lenses to protect his eyes from UV rays as well as a high-performance, wraparound design.

Does your dad geek out over woodwork? With help from Nemo Equipment’s newly launched Spoon Shaper Kit ($130), he can craft a unique keepsake. With a straight-blade knife, a hook knife, a folding saw, a leather bamboo-mounted strop, and a pencil and sandpaper, this canvas tool roll contains everything Dad needs to carve and sand a wooden spoon—he’ll just have to find the wood himself and apply his favorite finish. We recommend packing this for your next camping trip with Dad—there’s nothing like fireside carving.

Does your dad find sailboats cool? Does he believe in recycling, too? The Vanguard Billfold Wallet ($22) from Flowfold, a conservation-minded outdoor outfitter based in Peaks Island, Maine, offers a minimalist, water-resistant way to keep cash and cards organized while he’s adventuring. What’s more, it’s vegan, made in the USA, comes with a lifetime warranty, and is crafted from repurposed racing sailcloth and ballistic nylon webbing.

Do bugs love Dad almost as much as you do? Consider the gift of head wear made from organic fabric designed to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, chiggers, flies, and midges. The EPA- and FDA-vetted khaki Burlington No Fly Zone hat ($32), from Chaos’s Outdoor Summit Collection, will have Dad safe from insect-born illness and looking fit to go on safari.

It’s a backpack. It’s a cooler. It’s a . . . pretty cool backpack? Festive dads will appreciate arriving at the beach, barbecue, or campsite with their beer still chill on their back, thanks to the fetching new Cooler Pack ($115) from Alite Designs. It comes with backpack straps, a rope handle, a wet/dry divider to isolate food from beverage, and a removable waterproof insert, specifically designed to store a sixer. Cheers to Dad.

'Tis the season to catch a wave. And this year, Patagonia-loving dads can feel even better about it—the company’s board shorts are now all made in a fair-trade-certified facility. The classic Wavefarers ($69) are made of 38 percent recycled, quick-drying nylon and offer 50+ SPF protection to boot. And with nearly 20 style/color options, you can tailor your gift to Surf Dad’s trunk style.

Is your dad more of the type to take a hike? Timberland’s X Thread line is made from fabric harvested from plastic bottles that formerly littered the streets and landfills of Haiti. Which means the stylish, lightweight gift of a pair of Newport Bay 2.0 Canvas Hikers ($80) not only contributes to a cleaner, more circular economy, but it also helps to create jobs in the developing world. What’s more, these chukkas’ recycled mesh lining is comfortable and breathable, and their outsole is made from 15 percent recycled rubber.

There’s something special about unfolding the map once crossing the threshold of a national park. More than just directions, it offers a taste of the adventure and wonder to unfold. Whether your pop has a favorite NPS destination or you want to gift him a memento of a journey you took together, Muir Way offers a full range of framable, nostalgia-inducing maps. The collectible National Park Series ($49–249) boasts more than 60 designs depicting national and state parks, protected seashores, and Canadian parks, all available in 20 different color palettes.

For more than 70 years, Italy’s Fizan aluminum poles have been a go-to for trekkers, skiiers, Nordic walkers, and trail runners. The small company recently collaborated with U.S. -based Massdrop to design and produce a sky-blue, six-ounce Compact Hiking Pole ($60), updated with an ergonomic grip, smooth strap, hiking tip covers (for navigating snowy passes), and an internal locking system. This gift may be the kindest way possible to tell Dad to take a hike.

Dads and pocket knives go together like campfires and s’mores. For an affordable gift he’s sure to put to use, consider Leatherman’s new Juice CS3 ($30). Available in three jaunty colors, this sleek, pocketable tool comes with scissors, a bottle opener, and corkscrew assist, plus the tool company’s 25-year warranty.

When it comes to papa presents, you can’t get more classic than a watch. But it isn’t every day you find a timepiece he can take camping, climbing, and even swimming. A good choice for an adventurous father is a tactical watch; i.e., one created with the rigors of soldiers’ and sailors’ lifestyles in mind. Performance sport watch-maker Reactor’s recently released Gryphon ($350) comes with a 10-year lithium power cell, a nylon-webbed strap designed to ward off odor and dirt, and patented “Never Dark” illumination technology to provide dad with a source of light, even in the deepest, darkest wilds.

Slippers are yet another go-to dad gift. Inspire your father to enjoy his coffee and paper al fresco this summer with help from a comfy, outdoor-friendly pair. With leather lining, slip-resistant rubber outsoles, and wool-lined footbeds offering odor-resistant, moisture-wicking bona fides, the fashionable Reiths ($142) from Austria’s Giesswein Footwear will keep his feet relaxed, dry, and looking pretty chic.

Whether he’s a weekend warrior or a business traveler, your jet-setting papa is bound to get plenty of use out of the Split Adventure 38L Travel Backpack ($135) from Dakine. With a main compartment for clothing, space for shoes and dopp kits, a TSA-friendly laptop sleeve, fleece-lined sunglass and iPad pockets, and a board strap for skates, hiking poles, and extra layers, Dad will have everything he needs, nice and organized. And thanks to an ergonomic foam back panel and comfy shoulder straps, you’ll be sending him off in comfort, too.

If your dad’s more of the sleep-outside type, it may be time to splurge and update his base camp. Therm-a-Rest’s freestanding Arrowspace Shelter ($300) turns a campsite into a party. He can set it up over a picnic table, connect it to the compatible Tranquility 6 to create a luxurious tent set-up, or set it up wide and low to host a summer-shower viewing. It also comes with a backpack stuff sack for easy transport.

Has your father been really good this year? Might he benefit from an ergonomic, human-powered means of getting himself around? And not just around home base—the recumbent Traveler (about $2,100) from TerraTrike, designed for commuters and snow birds, folds down in less than a minute. In fact, it’s the only folding trike on the market that’s compactable into checked-baggage size. That means Dad can easily pack it into a plane, car, or camper, then recline and explore, anywhere he goes. Once he unfolds, it’s ready to ride.

While our final Father’s Day gift suggestion isn’t an outdoors-specific item, per se, adventurous dads eventually need to come home and clean up. Encourage “dirtbag dads” (as we lovingly refer to certain relentless outdoorsman) to pop in and shower once in awhile with the gift of a 100-percent organic Cloud Loom Robe ($148) from Coyuchi. Thick and plush, with a collared-silhouette and adjustable belt and side pockets, this offers a guilt-free avenue to rest and recovery.
