The Chicory Flower Contains Multitudes

Up close, one bloom becomes a whole bouquet

So common that it's sometimes considered a weed, chicory (Cichorium intybus) normally attracts attention for its brilliant color or its medicinal and culinary uses. A closer look reveals a botanical surprise. What appears to be a single flower with many petals is actually an inflorescence, as each "petal" is a complete flower with its own stamen tube and pollen-dappled styles. Magnified with a camera or a field lens, one bloom turns into a whole bouquet.
