Out of the Blue
A cormorant takes the plunge
Cormorants are just as effective at swimming as they are at flying. They can spend more than a minute underwater and dive to a depth of 100 feet as they hunt fish. Their prey know this only too well. Here, a school of fish prepares to scatter in the instant before a cormorant slices through the water. This image won the 2019 Underwater Photographer of the Year competition in the Black & White category.
