A thousand points of light: Photographer Kei Nomiyama captures fireflies at dusk
Fireflies light up a bamboo forest on the Japanese island of Shikoku as night descends. Entomologists believe these insects first developed bioluminescence as a warning signal. Only later did fireflies begin to employ the lights for their present purpose: courtship. Photographer Kei Nomiyama has visited Shikoku every year since 2012 to capture mesmerizing images.
