MANY HANDS: The Guinness World Record for number of trees planted in a single hour was decimated by the small Himalayan protectorate of Bhutan. 100 workers planted nearly 50,000 saplings in 60 minutes, breaking the old record by nearly 10,000 trees.

BILLIONS AND BILLIONS: In a preliminary assessment of the dollar impact of the 2015 California drought, researchers at UC Davis estimated a cost of a $2.7 billion to California’s economy due to lost crop, dairy, and livestock, including the cost of pumping ever more quantities of groundwater.

EVEREST BURNING: A study of the glaciers in the Everest Himalaya predicted that melting due to climate change will continue to outstrip new precipitation, resulting in ongoing recession of glacial ice. The bottom line: diminution of future freshwater supply.

CALI SENATE CANS COAL: The California Senate approved a bill introduced by President Pro-Tem Kevin de León asking the state employees’ retirement systems, CalPERS and CalSTRS, to divest from coal companies.

MELTED MOO: Environmentally responsible ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s announced it's latest creation, “Save Our Swirled” (SOS). Tagline: “If it’s melted, it’s ruined, whether it’s our ice cream or the world.”
