7 Wildest GoPro Thieves
These animals take the "all-terrain" camera to new heights
We’re all too familiar with home-made videos of pigeons taking off with someone’s French fries, or brown bears raiding residential garbage bins in Alaska. What happens when animal thieves target the very object that counts as evidence against them?
Extreme sport fanatics and adventurers alike have been sharing their point-of-view exploits worldwide—thanks to GoPro. The high-definition video camera is small, wearable, and highly portable. The virtually all-terrain GoPro easily allows users to capture their often heart-stopping footage and distribute to popular sites such as Youtube and Vimeo.
Like most new electronics, the GoPro is on the pricey side (my very own cost upwards of $500, although lesser expensive models priced around $130 are currently available). So it’s not surprising that the exceptionally compact camera is often targeted by thieves, and not all of them human. Here are the top seven GoPro camera crooks from Kingdom Animalia.
1. Lioness Gets a Taste of Camera, Africa
It takes a little investigation for this lion to realize the camera wouldn’t make for a very satisfying snack!
2. Squirrel Steals GoPro, Montreal
Unsure at first, this sneaky squirrel grabs the device and dashes with it up a tree, as the camera’s owner (with bread in hand) looks on.
3. Monkey Gets Away with GoPro, Bali
Completely surprising an onlooker, a monkey silently ambushes this camera and makes a run for it. Like an experienced burglar, the brainy monkey even managed to open the case of the GoPro and remove the battery before it was retrieved.
4. Crab Drags Camera Down Hole, Fiji
This curious crab takes a minute or two to inspect the loot, then makes down a crab hole with it-- all while his accomplice seemingly looks on.
5. Eagle Swipes Camera in Craig, Alaska
During a feeding frenzy in Alaska, this confused eagle flies away with a GoPro and carries it into a tree. Before long, it professionally discards the evidence by simply nudging it off of a branch. Good thing these cameras are durable.
6. Fox Gnaws on GoPro in Round Island, Alaska
Inquisitive by nature, this fox takes a few sniffs of the camera before deciding to investigate further. It licks and chomps on the stolen property before giving up. Said the owner of the GoPro in his youtube link: “When the fox ran off, I thought I'd never see my camera again. For about eight minutes we looked for it, then there it was. It turns on and records, but the lens is messed up and I'll need to have it repaired. I'm glad the fox itself didn't get hurt or swallow anything that could have harmed it.”
7. Grizzly Gets Up Close and Personal with GoPro, British Columbia
Thank goodness there was no one holding this camera while this nosy grizzly bear was checking it out.
