Plastic Paradise- The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A film by Angela Sun
The monthly meeting of the Los Serranos Group of the Sierra Club is Tuesday, January 20th, at 7:00 PM. The meeting will feature the award winning documentary film “Plastic Paradise”. The 57-minute independent film was authored by journalist, sportscaster and television host Angela Sun. The film documents her personal journey of discovery to uncover the phenomenon called “the great Pacific garbage patch.” In the film she travels to Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean, the heart of the Pacific garbage patch. Meeting is held upstairs in the First Presbyterian Church Education building, 869 N. Euclid Ave, Upland, take the left side stairs. New members and the public are welcome.
Thousands of miles away from civilization, Midway Atoll is in one of the most remote places on earth. And yet its become ground zero for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, syphoning plastics from three distant continents. In this independent documentary film, journalist/filmmaker Angela Sun travels on a personal journey of discovery to uncover this mysterious phenomenon. Along the way she meets scientists, researchers, influencers, and volunteers who shed light on the effects of our rabid plastic consumption and learns the problem is more insidious than than we could have ever imagined. Plastic Paradise was released in 2013 and won the Broadcast Award at the American Conservation Film Festival, the Environment Award at the San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival, and the Isla Award at the Catalina Film Festival. In 2014 it received the Jury Award at the Wild and Scenic Film Festival. It has been an official selection at numerous other film festivals from Hawaii to Georgia and from Boston to Big Bear. You will never see plastics in quite the same way again after viewing this film.
