If you’re looking to become an outings leader for our chapter, or just want to beef up your wilderness safety and survival skills, then this training is for you! This course satisfies first-aid requirements for most Bay Chapter outing leaders, but be sure to confirm requirements with your section/group officers.
There are two options: you can take the one-day class on Saturday and receive the Basic Wilderness First Aid certification of the American Safety & Health Institute, which costs $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Basic WFA is a practical, eight-hour course that prepares you to recognize and avoid wilderness hazards, and do first aid outdoors with whatever equipment you have or can improvise.
Or, you can take the two-day class for an additional $30 for members ($40 for non-members), and receive the higher-level WFA certification. This option adds more advanced skills and role-playing scenarios.
The training is indoors and masks are required.
Cost: Pay instructor in class. SC members: $80 (both days) or $50 (Saturday only). Non-members: $100 (both days) or $60 (Saturday only). The Chapter will pay the cost for current outings leaders (see Additional Directions).
Signup Instructions: You MUST email the instructor, Steve Donelan, at donelan@sonic.net to reserve a space in the class. For current SF Bay Chapter outings leaders, see Additional Directions below.
Bring: Lunch and outdoor equipment you would have with you that you could use to improvise a splint.
Additional Directions: Current SF Bay Chapter outings leaders can contact Zephir O'Meara at firstaid@sfbaysc.org. The Chapter will pay for your course (both days) but once your spot is confirmed you will be asked to mail a $50 deposit check to the Chapter (made out to Sierra Club SF Bay Chapter) at PO Box 2663, Berkeley, CA 94702, c/o WFA. This check will be destroyed unless you don’t show up to the class, in which case it will be cashed.
