We urge you to provide feedback on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for a General Management Plan Amendment for the areas of Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area now managed for dairy farming, beef cattle ranching, and full-time residential use. This is an important opportunity to help protect our nation’s public lands for future generations.
The comment period closes this Monday, September 23rd, so please act today! Comments are only accepted online, here on the National Park Service website.
Here is some suggested language for your comment, based on the Sierra Club’s careful consideration of the Plan and its Draft Environmental Impact Statement:
- All the ranching alternatives in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement involve the impairment of natural resources.
- Three National Park Service laws prohibit actions that will impair natural resources (the 1916 NPS Organic Act, Point Reyes National Seashore legislation Section 459c-6, and Golden Gate National Recreation Area legislation Section 460bb).
- Consequently, the Park Service should prepare a supplemental DEIS with ranching alternatives that comply with applicable laws requiring the protection of natural resources. The Park Service should then circulate that supplemental DEIS for public comment.
