Inspiring Connections Outdoors program wraps up 47th year of youth service

The San Francisco Bay Chapter's Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) program is wrapping up its 47th year of bringing Bay Area youth outdoors. In 2018, we partnered with over a dozen schools, agencies, and community centers. We led trips providing the equivalent of 961 youth-days in the great outdoors.

Our 2018 accomplishments include:

  • 47 trips including camping at the MacKerricher State Park on the north coast, snow trips to Hutchinson lodge, field studies in Yosemite, and backpacking the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail (see our calendar of upcoming trips here);

  • Over a dozen active school, agency, and community center partners (read about our current partners here and apply to partner with ICO in the future here);

  • 14 active certified trip leaders and seven newly trained trip leaders; and

  • 21 new volunteers. Without volunteer support, we simply cannot do what we do. Learn about getting involved as a volunteer here.

About ICO:

Inspiring Connections Outdoors (formerly named Inner CIty Outings) is a volunteer-led program of the Sierra Club that gets low-income youth out of the city to experience and explore the great outdoors.

The San Francisco Bay Chapter of Inspiring Connections Outdoors is a group of people dedicated to getting urban youth into the outdoors. ICO leaders organize a variety of outings, including hiking, car camping, snow camping and backpacking. We are active partners in the growing national movement to take urban kids out of the city and provide them with outdoor adventures. The volunteers give their time because they know from their own experience that spending time in the natural world can be transformative.
