Coming together after a tragedy

The Sierra Club is shocked and saddened by the heartbreaking loss of life caused by a calamitous fire at the "Ghost Ship" artist collective in Oakland's Fruitvale neighborhood. Our deepest condolences go out to the victims and to their families and loved ones.

Oakland is rightfully proud of its cultural diversity and its reputation as a magnet for creative people. Yet we can do far more to welcome and nurture our creative community, and to resist further displacement and harm as many parts of the city undergo rapid gentrification.

We would like to extend our great appreciation to the first responders, particularly the Oakland Fire Department and Oakland Public Works Department, as well as all the civic leaders and government agencies and their staff who have been working overtime, often through grief, ever since the tragic events of last Friday night.

National and local Sierra Club leaders, activists, and community members will continue to work with allies to advocate for more safe affordable housing, rent control, and tenants' rights, as well as promote a culture of equity, inclusion, and justice both here in Oakland and around the Bay. We know there's still more we can do.
