The City of Alameda's vice-mayor Frank Matarrese (endorsed by the Sierra Club in last election) is pushing to raise the inclusionary housing requirements in Alameda. His proposal would increase the percentage of affordable housing units and provide work-force housing within residential development projects. As the proposal states, "With the high home prices and rents in Alameda, low and even middle income households are in need of increased opportunities in new developments."
The vice-mayor's effort is being introduced via a city council referral to a city council agenda. It has been postponed three times due to overbooked agendas, but it’s back again on the September 6th agenda. If the idea gets three votes, the city manager and planning board will begin the process to revise city ordinances and code. Vice-mayor Matarrese told the Sierra Club, "I know we can do better and developers can still get their return with higher percentages. That's what I am asking my colleagues to support."
