Garden Valley Neighborhood House Solar Installation
The Sierra Club's Ready for 100 Campaign in partnership with RE-Volv and IOBY celebrated a Solar Energy Installation Ribbon Cutting at Garden Valley Neighborhood House (GVNH) on Friday, September 16th. GVNH was established in 1918, on the East Side of Cleveland, Ohio to serve residents in need with programs that provide food, promote the value of nutrition, increase self-sufficiency, instill hope, provide community education services and promote advocacy.
Our Environmental Social Justice group continues to grow! It’s very exciting to see how a new voice frequently re-energizes others just by asking questions and sharing observations from other spaces. We continued discussing our Cultural Transformative Initiative, which encourages developing Community through commitment to 5 main values that together will focus us on being effective and inclusive. Last month we reflected on Anti Racism; this month we look at Balance.
Balance is not just being able to do a lot of things in your day, nor is it related in this sense to movement (walking or stacking items or carrying awkward assortments up and down stairs). True Balance in the transformative sense relates to a commitment to care for ourselves AND others. Most of us have had to learn to take a day of rest from time to time. Others have had to ask for help when too many activities, responsibilities, or requests befall us all at once. Understanding Balance is understanding others and the human condition. In developing a community that encourages care of self, we learn that to be effective as a helper, a doer, or a leader, we must first understand our own needs and work daily to insure self care so that we have enough energy and compassion to care for those we are attempting to help. It’s a very fine line…but one well worth working toward to make the community grow into its best possible being.
Statewide Plastics Committee
Join Sierra Club Ohio on October 11th at 6pm with coalition partners Tackling the A-Z Impacts of Plastic for a free webinar: Your Health Matters! A phenomenal panel of speakers with diverse backgrounds and specializations will be discussing how fossil fuels are impacting the health of our children, and our own physical and mental health.
Ohio has the nation's largest population negatively impacted by oil and gas. From fighting radioactive oil and gas waste and centering impacted communities this team works to hold polluting corporations and state agencies accountable. Throughout the fall we will have ways to engage, learn, and activate on the processes contributing to pollution and worsening health effects. By shifting power structures to local communities, we hope to build a democratic, transparent, thriving, and transformational future for all.
Join us to learn from others' experiences in their political volunteering, connect with folks around the state, and troubleshoot issues you have had with political engagement. We will have leaders from our Political Committee joining to help answer questions, offer advice, and be of support with your volunteering journey. We look forward to you joining us in making an impact this season!
Calling all Young Environmental Leaders
How can you make a difference in this year's elections? Whether you are old enough to vote or not, the Young Environmental Leaders group is organizing a virtual call for you to learn how you can be the most effective in political work this year. No matter where you live, what your background is, or how much experience you have, you can play a critical role. In this session, we will explain local and state elections, provide resources and content about candidates, and encourage ways you can engage with local elections
Cultural Significance of the Five Rivers: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
Join us for an in-person presentation, dinner, and discussion on October 13th at 6pm in Dayton, OH. The rare convergence of five rivers in downtown Dayton has influenced human settlement and migration for thousands of years. The rivers provide a rich cultural and spiritual significance to residents past and present. This historical and cultural education opportunity will feature an Indigenous and African American perspective of the cultural and spiritual significance of the five rivers region, past and present.
National Drive Electric Week™ is an annual national outreach event to heighten awareness of today's widespread availability of plug-in vehicles and highlight the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric cars, trucks, motorcycles, and this year in our Electric Transit Buses. This year we combined forces in Wickliffe with LakeTran, the Ohio Sierra Club, and National Solar Tour to create a unique experience. The EV Rally was held on Friday, Sept. 30th at 9 am. at the Wickliffe, OH Park-n-Ride.
Portage Trail Group promotes "NatureScapes." We have helped plant a pollinator garden in Akron, and are assisting teachers planting a garden and food forest at North High School, Akron.
Why? "NatureScapes" make the earth healthier, AND people who live near them healthier too!
But please, join the movement, and create, or develop, or care for your own "NatureScape."
