The Sierra Student Coalition at OSU strives to serve as a bridge to connect students at The Ohio State University to opportunities on campus, in Columbus, and beyond that follow the Sierra Club’s three-part mission, to explore, enjoy, and protect our world. At the end of the day, we are a group of people who love learning about and spending time in the outdoors, and who are not afraid to step up and drive positive change.
Here are some examples of outings and activities we have participated in this past year:
- Hocking Hills Day trip this spring
- Sold T-Shirts to raise money for River Valley Organizing follow the East Palestine derailment
- Interviewed Campus sustainability officials regarding riverfront development
- Educational session and thrift shopping trip to learn the cycle of fast fashion
- Worked with the Ohio Environmental Coalition to learn more about, and take a trip to see, issues in Wayne National Forest last fall
- Lobbied Senator Sherrod Brown’s office in support of the American Red Rock Wilderness Act
Our Ohio State University Earth Day Celebration grew out of the same mindset of the first original Earth Day established in 1970; an event built by students, for students and beyond. This year we held this event on Friday, April 21st and had so much fun! We wanted to raise awareness, to teach, and to provide an exciting space that welcomed students from across all majors, faculty, and community members to connect over the one thing we all share; our wonderful planet. By combining live music, food, and vendors with a host of student organizations and educational speakers in one collaborative space, this event made it clear that we can indeed try to save the planet and have fun doing it.
We had many organizations participate including:

Folks from across the campus and community came together to celebrate all the ways we are working to protect our environment. I had great conversations with students and community members about our campaign to stop utility rate hikes. The Beyond Coal Campaign and Sierra Club Ohio are excited to continue to collaborate with the OSU Sierra Student Coalition.”
