Hello Sierra Club Ohio!
Our monthly newsletter comes at a time where we have grave concern for our neighbors in East Palestine, Ohio where a train derailment happened earlier this month. The concerns of environmental groups like ours are focused on the ongoing impacts to the East Palestine community. Please read our Op Ed to CNN and read further in this newsletter to take action to support this community.
As the new spring season approaches, we remain excited about our collective commitment to our climate and environment, and our continued forward movement and great possibilities for our work together.
We’re seeking new Steering Committee members, and other volunteers to serve in various capacities – read on for details – we welcome your involvement. Thank you in advance and great appreciation to our members, donors, and staff for your tireless commitment.
Forward with our power together,
Ericka Copeland
State Director, Sierra Club Ohio

Urge Gov. DeWine to listen to the demands of East Palestine!
On February 3, everything changed for residents of East Palestine, Ohio when a Norfolk Southern train derailed just outside of town, causing an evacuation and an environmental disaster. Fifty cars of the train derailed, including eleven tankers of highly toxic chemicals. In an effort to stop a catastrophic explosion, emergency responders released five tanker cars of vinyl chloride and ignited the chemicals.

Black History Month: Ohio Team Picks
|
We had such a great reaction from our Black History Month Staff picks that we published in 2021 that we wanted to do it again.
The media and art we consume helps create laughter, calm, and an escape from the stresses of life. Many of us think critically about the literature and music we consume, and we, again, are focusing on the works of Black creators. We happily recognize and celebrate the massive and meaningful contributions of Black artists. As an ongoing honor to Black History Month, we have created a list of Sierra Club Ohio team favorite picks - we hope you enjoy our favorites as much as we do.

Committee and Campaign Updates
|
Ohio Environmental & Social Justice Committee
The Ohio ESJ group has hit a place of challenge. Our enthusiasm to “get moving” has been slowed a bit by the ever present day to day surprises that we all face. The situation at East Palestine, the workloads of our folks who are actively employed on a daily basis, and even the care of our fur covered family members have all caused us to pause for a moment and reflect on our mission to serve on the Environmental and Social Justice Committee. The ESJ is continuing our work to gather information about our campaigns to help support and do transformative work towards our mission. We are in the process of helping to search for individuals for the Steering Committee, who can help us in our ever continuing efforts to be the most accommodating, equitable and inclusive of all peoples, their communities, and our public lands. Stay tuned! |

We are hiring an Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO) Intern
The ICO Intern will design and lead a recruitment strategy to build a Chapter-level volunteer leadership team. This team will develop a statewide strategy for the Inspiring Connections Outdoors program to engage youth partners and other community entities that are aligned with our mission to provide increased opportunities for youth, children, and families to develop and enhance personal connections to nature through community-inspired and led programming. The Ohio ICO Intern reports to the Chapter Director, for daily assignments and questions and works closely with Chapter staff on assigned tasks. The intern will help Ohio Chapter volunteers and staff, in collaboration with our partner organizations, to (re)build a sustainable Inspiring Connections Outdoors program for the Chapter and will gain great skill in grassroots organizing, coalition building, project management and operations skills.
