As we begin Black History Month, Sierra Club Ohio wishes to share meaningful activities, tributes, stories, and activities that are reflective of our continued desire to address inequities plaguing our communities, opportunities for engagement, and celebration of history.
Let’s Roll Up and Celebrate Transit Equity Day! Rosa Parks’ Birthday is the reason everyone can!
February 4th is Rosa Parks' birthday, and in 2018, it was officially recognized as Transit Equity Day as a way to commemorate her social justice and anti-racism work. This day marks a step toward addressing the inequities in public transportation. Though Black people are no longer forced to ride in the back of the bus, there’s still a lot more to do to ensure safety and access to ample routes and to eliminate exposure to hazardous pollutants while riding public transportation. People of color shouldn't worry if they will make it to work on time due to inadequate transit. If a low-wage worker has a long commute to and from their job on public transportation, they shouldn’t have to spend too much money to get to work while inhaling harmful fuels.
Considering the increase in federal investments via the BIL and IRA, now is the time for Departments of Transportation and Mobility throughout the country to transform transportation systems to be safe, accessible, and affordable for everyone. As we honor the sacrifices Rosa Parks and other activists made, we call for action to provide safe, accessible, and affordable hazardous-free transit for all, especially for those who rely on public transportation to make a living and to enjoy their community.
There’s no time like the present now that funding and policies are available to ensure people of color can gain access to quality services outside of their communities through equitable access and transportation.
