Portage Trails Group Summer updates

The Portage Trail Group Sierra Club stretches through 12 counties of Ohio from Medina and Ashland Counties east to the city of Youngstown and the Pennsylvania line. Mahoning and Trumbull Counties on the far east have been added to our group since covid temporarily stopped our in-person meetings over two years ago. Last year over 40 people joined an in person picnic in July and an EV (electric vehicle show) in September. We’ve shared zoom meetings twice a month.

YOU are welcome to join our environmental discussion meetings the second Tuesday of each month – Zoom Meeting ID: 862 6285 0672   Passcode: 725837. We’ve had between 5 and 25 households talking about whatever we wish to discuss – dreams and visions of sustainable lifestyles, gardens, politics, animals from birds to woodchucks, and our own latest thoughts of how to save the earth.

YOU are also welcome to join our program meetings the third Tuesday of months we don’t meet in person – Zoom Meeting ID: 874 0439 8733   Passcode: 184980.   Attendance has been from 15 to over 60 households. Our August 16 zoom will focus on the importance of environmental politics, and our Ohio Sierra Club’s political committee and PAC work.

We do “citizen scientist” water monitoring quarterly – usually on the Little Cuyahoga River through various parts of Akron. We also clean a stretch of highway. In the spirit of author and entomologist Doug Tallamy we’ve encouraged the creation of NatureScapes (or what Dr Tallamy calls “HomeGrown National Parks”) in a couple nursing homes, locations in Akron and Garrettsville, our own yards, or anywhere.  With a national Sierra Club GrassRoots Network grant, we’ve been working with staff at Akron North High School to plant gardens – a vegetable garden, and a perennial NatureScape pollinator area. We hope this project will continue, and spread to other locations.
