The Wayne National Forest is proposing a multi-year project to log, prescribe burn and add more roads in the Ironton Unit.
The Sunny Oaks project will be a multi-year project lasting up to 20 years. The proposal is to log 2835 acres sited as “an approximation”, prescribed burns of 2,000-4,000 acres per year, application of herbicides, 25 miles of new roads and reconstruction of old roads, the creation of log landings and skid roads and creation of fire breaks (logged areas to act as fire breaks)
Does it sound like a war on the forest to you?
Why is the forest service proposing this? They claim they are restoring forests to oak-hickory regeneration as well as for ruffed grouse populations. Why remove oak to grow oak?
Ohio’s public lands are under threat. The Wayne National Forest is currently leasing lands for fracking in the Marietta unit while proposing extreme projects in the Ironton Unit. We need our public lands for recreation, habitat for multiple species and for climate regulation.
This project is in the proposal stage. (scoping)
Let's send a strong message to the Forest supervisor T. Scardina, Region 9 District Supervisor K.Atkinson, Region 9 district ranger, Ironton unit district Ranger T. Slone, and Senator Brown that we say no to the destructive, war-like “Sunny Oaks” project.
