Over 3,000,0000 gallons of hazardous waste was buried in an unlined landfill during the 1970's near Springfield Ohio. Now the Tremont Barrel Fill site is threatening the ground water that 82,000 residents of Springfield and Clark counties rely upon for drinking. State, local, and community leaders all agree that the barrels containing paints, latex, adhesives, and asbestos need to be removed to protect the health and well being of residents, yet US EPA Region 5 is proposing to leave the solid waste and contaminated soils on site.
Just like in Flint Michigan the US EPA is compromising the quality of drinking water and health of communities because of the economic cost. Thanks to the unanimous opposition from residents, local health officials, and the Ohio EPA, they are re-considering their proposed clean up plan to leave hazardous solid waste on top of the aquifer near the City of Springfield's public water intakes. However, they need to hear from people like you and me that clean drinking water matters to the public and environmental health of our communities.
