Friday, Sept. 22, 5:00 p.m. - Sunday, Sept. 24, 2:00 p.m.
Briar Bottom Group Campground
50 Black Mountain CG Rd. Burnsville, NC 28714
A camporee is a camping/hiking weekend; the purpose of this one is to explore potential wilderness and other areas in the Grandfather and Appalachian districts of the Pisgah National Forest. Similar to last year's "Great Grandfather Wilderness Weekend Camporee," this 2017 group outing will provide multiple opportunities to become familiar with some outstanding wild areas within the western part of the Grandfather District and the eastern part of the Appalachian District.
You must register and pay.
The NC Sierra Club and other conservation groups are urging the US Forest Service to recommend eligible lands as new wilderness with this area, including the Black Mountains and Mackey Mountain. The weekend is planned as a boots-on- the-ground educational experience to engage Sierra Club members and non-members on the exceptional backcountry value and quality of this area, and how they can engage in the current Pisgah and Nantahala Forest Plan Revision process, the outcome of which could affect how these areas are managed.
Friday night there will be a meet and greet where campers can get more information about the hikes and meet fellow campers. Saturday night there will be a group meal and a presentation on the Forestry plan.
Hike descriptions will be available soon on the chapter website so be sure to check back. Space is limited and participants need to sign up with the hike leaders.http://www.sierraclub.org/north-carolina/events.
