If you enjoy hiking, kayaking or other outdoor activities and enjoy meeting new people with similar interests, please consider becoming a NC Sierra Club outings leader. You will be a vital part of one of the oldest environmental organizations in the country.
Currently, the 12 Groups in the NC Sierra Club offer about 120 to 200 outings a year. These include hikes, kayaking, paddle boarding, overnight camping trips, biking trips, birding, butterfly and frog habitat outings, visits to aquariums and bird sanctuaries, meditation-hikes, stargazing, industrial chicken farm tours, wood pellet factory tours, and a variety of service outings from trail maintenance to roadside clean-ups and wildlife habitat restoration work. You can lead what you love!
In order to become a qualified outings leader, you need to be a Sierra Club member of at least 18 years-of-age who has completed Outdoor Leadership Training (OLT101) and Basic First Aid. You have to be a Sierra Club member to attend this training. Cost of membership is $15 and you can join the day of the training, please bring cash or check.
The first aid training is being taught by Dr. Wes Wallace, an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill and a member of the Wilderness Medical Society. An alternative First Aid Course offered by the Red Cross typically runs anywhere from $40 to $70, depending on the county. You will get this outings appropriate first aid training for free!
If you are a current Sierra Club Outings leader, you can use this training to renew your OLT 101 and/or Basic First Aid (all outings leaders need to renew these requirements every 4 years. Even if you don't need to renew at this time, come to brush up on your skills, have a fun weekend, and brainstorm with other leaders.
