Duke Energy's new carbon reduction plan is full of missed opportunities - and a nuclear option.
The plan, filed on the eve of the first anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act, misses the chance to take advantage of the new incentives for renewable energy provided under federal law.
“In order for the carbon plan to be successful, Duke should be using their considerable resources to lead the transition toward clean renewable energy," said Mikaela Curry, Sierra Club field manager. "Instead, they continue to plan and do business as usual, pushing to expand and double down on methane gas, which will force communities across the state into long-term obligations for new polluting infrastructure."
The carbon plan includes a proposal to add nuclear reactors to the Belews Creek Steam Station in Stokes County. Sign a petition from the Dan Riverkeeper to say no nukes for NC!
The plan also comes as Duke Energy seeks N.C. Utilities Commission approval for a significant rate increase for its North Carolina customers. Public hearings on the proposal are over, but you can still submit written comments.
