Meet the N.C. Chapter's 2023 leaders

A clutch of new leaders has stepped up to guide the N.C. Sierra Club's activities in 2023. Thanks to all our members who voted in the year-end Chapter and Group executive committee elections!

The Chapter's excom has seven at-large members who are elected to two-year terms, with a group of three elected one year and four elected in the next. In December, Sierra Club members re-elected two at-large members, Nicole Gaines of Browns Summit and Hannah Furgiuele of Barnardsville, and added a newcomer to the group, Michael Weinstein of Candler.

The executive committee, which also includes representatives from each of the state's 13 local Groups, elected officers to one-year terms at its meeting on Jan. 24.

While Nicole Gaines is starting a new two-year term as an at-large member of the committee, she's stepping down as Chapter chair after two years of strong, insightful leadership. We're very grateful for her hard work and dedication, and glad she's still helping to guide the Chapter's mission!

Hannah Furgiuele was elected chair, with current excom members Katie Tomberlin of Newport elected vice chair and Pat Carstensen of Durham stepping up for another term as secretary.

Local Groups are in various stages of electing their own leadership teams for 2023. Whether you're a member or a supporter of the N.C. Sierra Club's work, we encourage you to connect with your local Group as a volunteer or simply to stay informed about events, activism and issues in your region.
