This week, the N.C. General Assembly wrapped up the map-making they were required to do for court-ordered redistricting, then adjourned for a break until Monday, Sept. 30.
We also saw some retirement announcements from legislators including Sen. John Alexander (R - Wake) and Rep. Michael Speciale (R - Craven), who won’t be seeking election again, while Sen. Andy Wells (R - Catawba, Alexander) announced that he’s running for Lieutenant Governor.
Court to review maps passed by legislature
A state court ordered that about half of North Carolina’s state legislative voting districts must be redrawn because they were illegally drawn to favor Republicans. Legislators completed and passed the map-redraws this week. The court will review the new maps to determine if there is still partisan bias; they could approve them or the court could alter the proposed lines. You can read more about this at WRAL.
Duke Energy multi-year ratemaking still in limbo
No compromise has been reached by the conference committee on the Duke Energy ratemaking bill, S 559 “Storm Securitization/Alt. Rates” after the House turned the multi-year ratemaking part of the bill into a study in August. But we understand that the bill is still very much alive.
Opportunity for Action
Please weigh in with your House member to let them know that the House study of a variety of ratemaking tools is still the best way to go. Ask them to vote “no” on any S 559 conference report that includes multi-year rate-making.
