Council members of the Town of Apex voted Tuesday in favor of two resolutions committing the town to action on clean energy and climate change.
One resolution supports the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and other will commit the town to transition to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2050.
The climate resolution passed on a 4-1 vote, and the clean energy resolution passed 4-1. Both were introduced by Councilman Bill Jensen.
Sierra Club volunteers have been working with local governments across North Carolina to encourage passage of similar resolutions. Hillsborough, Asheville and Buncombe County are among more than 100 local governments nationwide that have done so.
Harvey Richmond, an Apex resident and the Sierra Club Capital Group's conservation co-chair, supported Jensen's work on the measures and was present to observe the council's vote.
"The Town of Apex has taken a bold step not only by declaring its concern over climate change, but by committing to action that will help combat it," Richmond said. "By itself, one town makes only a small difference in fighting climate change, but Apex is now part of a worldwide community of leaders who are leading the transition away from fossil fuels and toward a clean, renewable energy economy."
