The N.C. Sierra Club appreciates the decision by state regulators to require the Chemours company to show that GenX air emissions from its Fayetteville Works will not be an ongoing source of groundwater contamination.
The state Division of Air Quality today told Chemours it would have three weeks to show that the facility's GenX air emissions can be controlled to halt groundwater contamination or the emissions will be prohibited.
In response to the state's announcement, the following statement was issued by Cassie Gavin, director of government relations for the N.C. Sierra Club:
"This is a bold move by the Division of Air Quality to protect the health and safety of people who get their drinking water from the Cape Fear River or local wells. The agency’s action appropriately puts the burden squarely on Chemours to show that it can operate without contaminating groundwater with GenX.”
