This riparian corridor along Carson Creek near Folsom is at risk of being lost.
Making our dream of an environment that we and generations to come can enjoy is a never-ending effort and there has been an uptick in the proposed assaults on our green spaces, forests, rivers and streams over the last few months. Cries for help in stopping or amending projects affecting our region come in from our members and environmental partners almost weekly. You can support our efforts by helping to educate your friends and neighbors by spreading the news, attending meetings with decision makers to learn more and express your concern about proposed plans, and sharing petitions. New projects that we are working on include:
The proposed expansion of the City of Folsom into lands outside of established borders for growth will be presented to the public at an upcoming Folsom City Council meeting, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday April 23. The area under consideration for intense development is approximately 2,800 acres in size, straddles the El Dorado County and Sacramento County lines and would host close to 9,000 homes and other facilities. The proposal violates regional planning goals for sustainability, lacks an identified source of water, will increase traffic with negative impacts on air quality, and will create a loss of valuable riparian habitat that exists along the two creeks the development will encroach upon. Read more on why we are opposing more sprawl for Folsom. Sprawl is a regionwide problem recently outlined in the Sacramento Bee: The Sacramento region has approved too much sprawl already; a reckoning is here

The County is proposing to expand motor vehicle activity at Sailor Bar County Park along the American River. The expansion would allow automobile access to dirt roads now used by families, hikers, dog walkers, folks who fish, and birdwatchers. The area supports a significant variety of wildlife which use this quiet section of the river for foraging, raising young, and shelter from more densely developed areas along the corridor. We believe that there are sufficient paved roads and parking lots at Sailor Bar adequately addressing the needs for public access while retaining the natural areas which have finally recovered from prior degradation. You can help by signing on to this petition Save Sailor Bar.
Protecting the American River continues to be a priority for our Executive Committee. We are partnering with the Save the American River Association on several projects. Comments from our group were submitted to the United States Army Corps of Engineers supporting an approach that is consistent with “engineering with nature” and demanding that they avoid the denudement of the American River from Sacramento State University to the Mayhew Drain in their levee rehabilitation. We are also in support of SARAs efforts to minimize the impacts of the proposed Truxel Bridge crossing that the City of Sacramento is proposing, and preserving 20 acres of open land adjacent to the river in Rancho Cordova. Please check out the Save the American River website to learn how you can support our collective efforts.
Spring Social!
Do you enjoy event organizing and meeting like-minded people in our community? We’d like to host another “Spring Social” gathering for our members and other environmental organizations. We have the opportunity to rent an indoor/outdoor space featuring music, finger foods and good company this coming May but more help is needed in putting this event together.
