Check Out Our New Community Action Guide!
Our group is often asked to weigh in on local issues like development projects and other impacts on our local environment. The goal is to enable our members and their neighbors to take action within their communities while we will do all we can to support those efforts.
To better assist, our group recently published a short video and handy "how to guide" with easy steps to start getting active in issues that affect you and your community. From your city council to the federal government, learn about the key steps you can take to influence decision-makers and increase participation.
If you want the Sacramento Group to support a specific issue, please first review the Community Action Guide and recommended steps. This will ensure you are prepared and will help us be able to help you. Check out the video and guide!
Election Endorsements - Your Help Is Needed
We are currently preparing to review and consider endorsements for candidates running in local elections that affect Sacramento County and who are committed to supporting and upholding the Sierra Club and our Sacramento Group's goals and ideals. To begin this work, we have developed a Candidate Questionnaire and are sharing them with candidates running for elected office throughout the county. Potential candidates will include, but are not limited to, those running for the:
- Sacramento County Board of Supervisors
- Sacramento City Mayor
- City Councils in cities such as Elk Grove, Folsom, Rancho Cordova, etc.
- Candidates for State Assembly and Senate
We are looking for Sierra Club members to participate in our interview panels which are an important step in the process. To participate, you may not be a delegate to a political party or employed by a campaign, and you must be a Sierra Club member in good standing. If you are interested, please email us right away at sacramentosierraclub@gmail.com
Global Day of Action To End Fossil Fuels in Sac - September 17th
This September, the United Nations Secretary-General is hosting a first-of-its-kind Climate Ambition Summit in New York to demand that nations stop the fossil fuel expansion driving the climate emergency. Thousands of activists around the world will take to the streets in their local communities to demand their governments stop permitting fossil fuel projects. This could be the moment California Governor Gavin Newsom issues a moratorium on new oil drilling permits. We need people power to show him that this is what Californians want!
On Sunday, September 17th, a family-friendly day of action will be held in Old Sacramento featuring carnival games, a giant puppet show, speakers, and performers. Sign up to join us and local Sacramento environmental groups for this event. And if you would like to volunteer at the event, please email ilonka@oilgasaction.org.
