Photo Essay: Natomas Basin Conservancy

Brad Branan, Sacramento Group Executive Committee Member, contributed a photo essay to the July issue of Sacramento Magazine featuring images he shot around the Natomas Basin Conservancy.

One image from Brad’s essay titled “Blackbird in Mustard” (featured here) has also been selected for the 2023 California State Fair’s Competitive Exhibits Program in the Nature category and will be on display during the annual State Fair that runs through July 30th.

“Conservancy property is not open to the public, but people are free to view it from the roadside,” Brad shares in the essay. “Bird watchers can often be seen with spotting scopes or cameras doing just that.” You can access the photo essay on here: Wildlife Wonder

Still Time To Help Sacramento Adopt an Effective Climate Action Plan

Tell the City of Sacramento what you think about their Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP)

Are you interested in what the city's plans are to address the impacts of climate change and make the city a more livable, resilient city? You can use the self-guided online workshop for the City's General Plan and CAAP to find out what the city's goals and intended actions are for different areas including environmental justice, mobility, and historic and cultural resources. You don't have to be an expert or knowledgeable about local politics to give your feedback on this, the City has made it easy to understand their plans and provide input. It's also available in Spanish and Chinese! The public comment window will close around late August. You can also watch a recorded meeting where City staff discuss the General Plan and CAAP if you want some more details.

Join Our Team & Make a Difference Today!

Executive Committee Seeks Two New Members

Our Sacramento Group’s Executive Committee welcomes local Sierra Club members to join and volunteer a few hours per month to help meet our environmental and administrative goals. Training is available, and work can be completed remotely from the comfort of home.

What Does Our Group Do?

The Sierra Club is widely known for providing recreational opportunities and taking political action on a greater scale at the state and national levels.

Our local Sacramento Group:
•   addresses local environmental actions in Sacramento County
•   offers political support for local environmentally-minded candidates
•   provides educational and interactive opportunities for our members

Our seven-member Executive Committee collaborates to meet the group’s goals and shares the responsibilities. Many hands make light work, and we hope you’ll join us!

The time commitment for both volunteer positions can be as little as one to two hours per week, and the Executive Committee meets via Zoom on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8:00 pm.
The Secretary will help by attending and taking minutes at our monthly meetings and will provide general support. The Secretary does not need to, but can, be an elected member of the Executive Committee.
The Treasurer will assist our Executive Committee Chair with budget oversight and requests. The Treasurer does not need to, but can, become an elected member of the Executive Committee. Our current Treasurer will be in place until the end of this year - we are seeking a replacement now so that training will be available prior to the beginning of 2023.

In addition to our monthly request to help support the much-needed trash cleanups sponsored by the River City Waterway Alliance and Sacramento Picks It Up, we hope you might take the opportunity to support one of the organizations that are doing the work needed to preserve natural areas in our County.

Support can come in many forms like taking a hike or mountain biking at Deer Creek Hills, volunteering at the Native Plant Garden at Camp Pollock, or helping with a fundraising event. These are just a few things that we enjoy and hope you will take some time to participate too!
