2024 Local Election Endorsements On the Horizon - Get Involved!

The Sacramento Group's Political Committee Co-Chair, Evan Minton, is spearheading the efforts to prepare the group's Executive Committee to evaluate and endorse local candidates running in 2024. He is currently crafting the updated candidate questionnaires that will ensure that there is a thorough and accurate view of where each candidate stands on the key issues that are important to our team.

The group will endorse candidates that are committed to supporting our shared goals and ideals. The candidates being elected to office through Sacramento County will be eligible to ask for an endorsement including, but not limited to the Board of Supervisors, Sacramento Mayor and Council, and cities such as Elk Grove, Folsom, Rancho Cordova, etc.

We will be looking for Sierra Club Members to participate in our interview panels which will begin in late Summer and early Fall. Eligible participants must be members in good standing, may not be a delegate to a political party, and may not be employed by a campaign. City of Sacramento Climate Action Plan

Now Available for Public Review

The city of Sacramento's draft Climate Action Plan has been released, along with its 2040 General Plan. The public review process is now open and will run through August 2023. The city has an online self-guided workshop to aid with public review, and has two upcoming webinars to discuss the plans:  
Tuesday, June 6th from 10-11:30 am
Thursday, June 29th from 5:30-7:00 pm

The plan details measures to meet the city's climate goals in sectors like transportation, land use, the built environment and waste, and also details the city's adaptation strategies for protecting communities more vulnerable to climate change. Interested in what progress the city has made on climate in the last few years? Sierra Club Sacramento gave input for the recently released 350 Sacramento Climate Report Card, which provides a detailed overview of the city's work.

On Saturday June 24th The Sierra Club's Tobacco Control and Environmental Justice project will also be hosting a conference for young adults and community activists that will cover tobacco as an environmental issue and show how to effectively engage decision makers around the state. This event is free, you can register on this link and lunch will be provided.

We will also be doing a Community Clean up at 3:00PM following the conference.You can sign up for the cleanup HERE.

Outings Program News & Updates

There was a great turnout for the Outdoor Leader’s Picnic in April that was held at William Land Park. About 25-30 Outings leaders and guests attended, including leaders from a number of groups in the Mother Lode Chapter (MLC).

In addition to a pizza party sponsored by the Sacramento Outings Group, we had a round table discussion about many outings-related topics, including Outdoor Leader Training (OLT), fundraising, outings, and updates provided by representatives from both the MLC Executive Committee and the Sacramento Group Executive Committee.

New Outings leaders are welcome to enhance the capacity of the group and to add more adventures to the list of offerings. In-person Outdoor Leader Trainings are resuming and are being led by the new MLC Outings Training Director, Mae Chaplin, Ph.D., a professor in the Education Department at Sacramento State University.

Watch your email and/or visit the Sacramento Group’s Meetup Page for announcements and details about when future OLT training classes will be scheduled.
Requirements to be a new Sierra Club Outings Leader include completing all of the following:  

Either an in-person OLT session or the online OLT training offered by Sierra Club National
Basic first aid training certification program
Two provisional training hikes under the supervision of a currently certified Sierra Club Outings Leader
