WHAT WE DO
Preserve and Protect
Sacramento is blessed with rivers, creeks, vernal pools, abundant with birds and other wildlife, wildlife preserves, open space and agricultural lands.
The Sacramento Group is the local Sierra Club group representing the Sacramento County area, with the goal of preserving our wild places and cleaning our environment. We get involved in local, state and national conservation campaigns and actions. Examples include promoting solar energy, water conservation, water quality protection, air quality improvements, and stopping the clearcutting of forests.
We also participate in the Sierra Club's Grassroots Action Network on the Club's national priorities including Beyond Coal, Beyond Oil, Beyond Natural Gas, Our Wild America and Youth and Diversity.
Explore and Enjoy
We hope to make the Sacramento County an area where people can enjoy our rivers, forests, native plants, birds, fish and other wildlife.
We lead outings to special places, near and far – find out when and where on our Meetup page and the Outings page. We also train outings leaders and offer first aid training so that our sponsored hikes are safe for all.
Participate in Local Planning
Sierra Club Sacramento Group volunteers get engaged with government in anything that can affect the quality of our environment. Recent examples include the City of Sacramento General Plan policies on parks and the urban forest; County of Sacramento plan for Cordova Hills, a sprawl development in the east county; Elk Grove's attempt to win approval to urbanize 8,000 acres of farmland; reviewing the Bay Delta and the South Sacramento County Habitat Conservation Plan to protect vernal pools and threatened wildlife like Swainson's Hawks as Sacramento's population grows; supporting the regional government's Sustainable Communities Strategy.
WHO WE ARE
Sierra Club Sacramento Group
The Sierra Club Sacramento Group represents the Sacramento County area and is the largest group belonging to the Mother Lode chapter.
Mother Lode Chapter
California is unique among states in that it has 13 chapters representing nearly 150,000 members. The Mother Lode Chapter has more than 16,000 members. Due to its large geography, the chapter is split into eleven local Sierra Club groups.
National Sierra Club
Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization – with more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge to move away from the dirty fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and toward a clean energy economy.
